The girls discover that Alison also murdered Ian and kidnapped Melissa, whom they free from the closet in the bedroom before escaping the burning house via a secret passage that Aria remembers hiding in to scare Jason a few years ago.
Trapped inside the house, Alison is presumed dead, although her body is never found. At the end of the book, in an unnamed high school somewhere in America, a girl whose name is an anagram of Alison DiLaurentis starts her first day of senior year.
